Over the past few years, I’ve gotten to know some artists from my hometown who’ve really made a name for themselves on the global art stage. One of them, Nazareno Biondo, a sculptor, totally blew my mind. When I visited his studio, I was hit by this wave of intensity that’s hard to put into words. I was practically in tears the whole time; it was a pretty emotional experience, unlike anything I’d ever felt before. On the studio walls, covered in marble dust, he had this sentence written that just resonated with me and gave me the push I needed to believe in my own art again, especially after I’d been considering quitting it for a while. Out of that whole experience came this painting I called “REStArt.” It’s like a little version of one of my earliest sand works, but with a splash of color added in. It felt like a fresh start, a chance to begin again, but this time with all the wisdom and experience that time has given me.
